Need to measure a specific area for an idea or project? Using the GIS Measure Tool makes it easier to do so without the hassle of heading out with a yardstick!
First, just select the measure tool from the “Markup” tab at the top of the application. It’ll look like a ruler in a section called “Measure”
Clicking the icon will give you immediate access to distance measuring. If you’d like to see other options, click the triangle next to the icon. This gives you additional options for measuring area.
After choosing a measurement tool, click once on the map where you’d like to start your measurement from. You can keep clicking points until your satisfied with the measured distance or area. Double-clicking will finalize the measurement and free your cursor.
Before or after measurement you can change the units using the distance and area drop downs as seen above.
Now that you’ve done some measurements, you can edit your measurement areas or remove them using the Edit Drawings tools. Notice that when you edit the measurement, the calculated values change.
Closing the map or clicking Clear will erase all your measurements. If you’d like to keep them, make sure to save them in a project!
