Christmas is almost here! We know all of our clients definitely made it onto Santa’s Nice List, which means Santa should be stopping at each of their municipal buildings to drop off pet registration forms and parking ticket payments.
If you want to track Santa’s flight this year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) organization tracks Santa’s whereabouts every Christmas Eve using GIS.
Over 60 years ago, a misprint of a telephone number for Santa mistakenly directed children’s phone calls to the NORAD Commander-in-Chief’s line. Instead of pointing out the mistake, then Director of Operations, Colonel Harry Shoup, gave radar indications of Santa’s location to the children who called. Since that day in 1955, NORAD has been the official Santa tracker.
In recent years, NORAD has implemented GIS and technology capabilities to make tracking Santa a more interactive experience. On Christmas Eve, be sure to check out their website where you can track Santa’s flight, play games, and explore the North Pole.
Merry Christmas to all of our readers! We’ll be back in the new year with more GIS blog posts. Until then, have a great holiday and a happy new year!
