We’ve all experienced the agony of not being able to find a parking spot. However, many of us probably have not experienced the added difficulty of trying to find a handicap parking spot. The demand for handicap parking is trending upwards, meaning there is a greater need for information regarding handicap parking.
In South Australia, a research analysis showed that there were about 70,000 disability parking permit holders, and that many are having difficulty finding handicap accessible parking spaces, particularly in unfamiliar areas.
With this information, two agencies partnered with Esri to form an app that allows people to locate handicap parking spaces: BlueBays. The information in this app gives users knowledge about how many spaces are available, whether the bays are extra wide, whether there is extra space to the left or right, and where the spaces are located in relation to a building.
The added bonus of this app and GIS capabilities is that users are invited to add to the data collection; since its launch, 2,582 new handicap parking spots have been added for other disabled persons to utilize.
