As your investment in GIS grows, it’s likely your list of available layers will grow as well. While having every bell and whistle is great, you may eventually find that your layer list is a bit cluttered when you’re trying to quickly access one utility’s worth of information. Enter Layer Themes. Located at the top of the layer list, we can configure groups of layers called Layer Themes.
Using YourTown™ as an example below, you can see the layer theme dropdown box which defaults to “All Available Layers”.
Clicking on the dropdown will give you a list of pre-configured groups of layers. In YourTown™ we’ve created presets for the utilities, cemeteries, and Trees/Signs (DPW).
Clicking on any of these will automatically turn on some layers and hide ones that don’t fit in the category. For example, clicking Sanitary will bring up the sanitary sewer while hiding the other utility layers.
Not all sites are set up to use layer themes right now, so let us know if you’re interested! Stay tuned for next week’s #TipTuesday.
