With energy prices and the consumption of fossil fuel a concern in every home, looking to alternative energy sources has quickly become a topic of interest for many. GIS capabilities are being used in Minneapolis to help residents recognize if they are a good candidate for solar photovoltaic energy systems based on information about surrounding buildings.
For each address, you can click on your building to see if it’s a good candidate for a solar panel system. For ones with good potential, the map will give you information on how many panels you could fit, and how much energy and money you could save annually.
Unfortunately, some buildings aren’t good candidates for solar panels, in which case the map will let you know why.
Additionally, the map includes information about federal tax incentives and financing options for interested parties with high-potential buildings. This GIS technology helps spread information and thus empower Minneapolis citizens to take ownership over sustainability and their energy consumption.
