Flu season is upon us, and people are running out to their local pharmacy to get symptom-reducers and anti-virals. Walgreens, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the US, has been using GIS to better serve their customers.
“Understanding our customers—where they live, where they work, why they’re shopping us—is the core of what we do, and that’s in many ways a spatial question,” said Dave Miller, the Senior Director of Market Planning & Research.
In the video below, Walgreens describes how combining flu prescriptions with their maps, they could understand where the flu was occurring throughout the country before the CDC reported on it. Their flu map is close to real time and puts a spatial lens on all of their information.
